The third stage of the Vuelta 2024, which stretched from Lousã to Castelo Branco, was not just another stage of one of the mythical events of world cycling; was a showcase of strategic innovation through the partnership between VOST Portugal and the Municipality of Castelo Branco. This collaboration brought to life a webapp designed to improve the viewer experience, marking a significant step in the way cycling events are managed and enjoyed.
The Webapp Initiative
VOST Portugal has developed a web application in partnership with the Municipality of Castelo Branco. This tool allowed more than 3000 unique users to explore the areas available to viewers and the parking areas for the end of the third stage. This initiative was not only about convenience, but also about harnessing technology to manage the flow of crowds, ensuring safety and improving the overall viewer experience.
Operational integration
In addition to the management of spectators, the presence of VOST Portugal was felt in the operational backbone of the event. We participated in the operational meetings, providing data collected on social networks and through collaboration with our Spanish counterparts (VOST Spain and VOST Extremadura) for viewer management. This involvement culminated in the presence of two elements of VOST Portugal in the Command Center of the race, along with other key entities (SMPC Castelo Branco, GNR, PSP, INEM, Red Cross).
Public and organisational praise
The success of this partnership has been publicly acknowledged. The Spanish organization of La Vuelta praised the web application for its functionality and user involvement, reflecting positively on the local organization of the event. At the local level, the Mayor of Castelo Branco highlighted the initiative in a local newspaper, underlining its role in making the event more accessible and enjoyable for both residents and visitors.
Conclusion
VOST Portugal has once again demonstrated how technology and local governance can collaborate to transform sporting events. @vostpt's involvement, from the web application to real-time operational support, set a precedent for future events, showing how data and digital tools can improve the viewer experience. This stage will be remembered not only for the race itself, but also for the innovative approach that made it possible.
